G. Satheesh Reddy is an Indian Aerospace engineer, Missile Scientist[2][3] and the 12th Scientific Adviser[4] to the Indian Defence Minister (SA to RM).

Early life

Reddy belongs to an agricultural family from Nellore,[5] Andhra Pradesh. He studied in local government school till his 10th class and pursued his Intermediate education from VR College at Nellore. He further graduated in Electronics and Communication Engineering from JNTU, Anantapur and received his MS and Doctorate from JNTU, Hyderabad. Prior to his assignment as Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri[6] (SA to RM),[7] he was the Director of National Defence Avionics Laboratory,[8] Research Centre Imarat (RCI) based at Hyderabad.[9]

R&D contributions

After joining the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1986, Reddy[10] led the Conceptualization, Design, Development and production of Inertial Sensors, Navigation schemes, Algorithms & Systems, Calibration methodologies, Sensor Models, Simulation along with development of Satellite Navigation Receivers and Hybrid Navigation Systems. Under his leadership, advanced products and varieties of Avionics systems have been produced and successfully flight tested in strategic programmes of the country. As Project Director, led the design and development of Ring Laser Gyro based INS System, MEMS based INS System, Sea-Guard Reference System and Ship Navigation system strengthening the country’s self reliance in high accuracy and long range navigation and also successfully developed a 1000 kg class guided bomb.[11] His long term expertise has been providing the necessary thrust to the programmes of national importance. As Director RCI,[12] led the development of Avionics technologies in critical areas of Inertial Systems, Embedded Computers, Control, Real Time Software and Simulation,Power Supplies, RPF, Seekers, Antennae, Flight Instrumentation for various Defence programmes[13] - Agni variants, Prithvi, Dhanush, Astra, Akash, underwater missiles, BrahMos, Nirbhay, Helina, Nag, MRSAM, Programme AD - PDV interceptor, Two stage Ship Launched Target, AAD and other defence programmes. He spearheaded a number of Technology Development, Mission Mode, S&T projects delivering variety of Systems to multiple Projects in different capacities. He led the development and production of GPS+GLONASS+GAGAN on Module (G3OM) receiver and System on Chip (SoC) bringing in quantum jump in miniaturization of Onboard Avionics; led the development of IIR Seeker for anti tank applications and long range BMD applications. Played a crucial role in development of high accuracy accelerometers for the long range precision Navigation.[14] He is a renowned expert in Navigation and Avionics technologies.

Honours and achievements

Reddy is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE),[15] Royal Institute of Navigation London (FRIN),[16] Aeronautical Society of India (FAeSI), Royal Aeronautical Society London (FRAeS),[17] Institution of Engineering and Technology UK (FIET), Society for Shockwave Research (FSSWR), Institution of Engineers (India) (FIE), Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences (FAPAS), Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (FIETE) and a Senior Member of many other professional/scientific bodies in the country and abroad. He has been awarded Full Member Diploma and inducted as a Foreign Member of the Academy of Navigation & Motion Control, Russia and is an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, USA (AFAIAA). In recognition of his distinguished contributions in the country, Computer Society of India conferred on him the Honorary Fellowship (Hon.FCSI).[18] Dr Satheesh is also an Honorary Member of ACDOS, India.
Reddy received the prestigious Indian Science Congress Association Homi J. Bhabha Memorial Award,[19] DRDO Young Scientist Award and Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance,[20] from the Honourable Prime Ministers of India. He is also a recipient of the Aeronautical Society of India Dr Biren Roy Space Science & Design Award, Astronautical Society of India Rocketry & Related technologies Award[21] DRDO Scientist of the Year Award, FAPCCI Outstanding Engineer Award, IETE B.V. Baliga Memorial Award, Systems Society of India Vikram Award[22] and many other honours/recognitions. He has delivered many endowment lectures,[23] Key Note addresses during National/International conferences.[24]
